Stanford students and their spouses or domestic partners can use this pharmacy which offers: full prescriptions, Internet refill requests, counseling on different medications, over-the-counter items (think common cold stuff), and emergency contraception (Plan B). If you have Cardinal Care, the prices are low but there is a co-payment. If you have different insurance, check with your provider about reimbursement. In general, Vaden prices are lower than community pharmacies. There is a quarterly fee for Vaden services, which covers weekday medical appointments, phone and web services, short-term therapy, and health and wellness programs. Not covered by this fee are medication, physical therapy, immunizations, or long-term therapy. You’ll have to look off-campus (see listings in this book) for those services.

In general, Vaden is a pretty good resource for students. Within the center are many branches: a pharmacy, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), an X-ray clinic, a physical therapy center, an allergy, immunization and injection clinic, the Sexual Health Peer Resource Center (SHPRC), and the Health Promotional Services (HPS) office. HPS provides education and support for a variety of health-related issues, including nutrition and weight management, sexual assault and harassment, substance abuse, and sexual health and relationships, while also serving as the organizational body for Peer Health Educators, or PHEs.

CAPS provides individual, couple, and group psychological counseling for all registered undergraduate and graduate Stanford students. Each student is eligible for a free initial evaluation or short-term counseling. If long-term care is needed, CAPS can refer you to the appropriate resource. Additionally, CAPS offers workshops and support groups throughout the year. Topics include depression, anxiety, and procrastination.

The Bridge is a group of student volunteers who provide free, confidential counseling to Stanford and the neighboring community, 24 hours a day by phone and on a drop-in basis. They offer peer counseling and support to help people develop their own solutions and are there to listen. Student staff members undergo a ten-week training class and volunteer every week, while a few students live at the Bridge year-round, making the service possible.

Sexual Health Peer Resource Center (SHPRC)

The SHPRC is an independent, student-run organization aimed at increasing awareness among members of the Stanford community regarding sexual health issues. The Center offers students 30 free condoms per quarter, exchangeable for other products such as massage oils, lube, or other forms of birth control such as dental dams and female condoms. Additionally, the SHPRC also provides information on STD transmission and testing, contraception, pregnancy tests, and other related health issues. Stop by to talk to a volunteer, check out the library, or purchase a variety of products below-cost.

Stanford is committed to providing a place of work and study that is free of sexual harassment and all forms of intimidation or exploitation. SHPO provides training in sexual harassment prevention, to students, faculty and staff. The office coordinates resolutions to sexual harassment concerns.

The Department of Public Safety provides law enforcement, security, safety, crime prevention, and emergency services on Stanford campus 24 hours a day.

Emergency Ride Home Program

Note: Freshmen only; registration required.

Parking and Transportation Services, in conjunction with Yellow Cab of Palo Alto, provides freshmen students (sorry upperclassmen) with three free emergency taxicab rides back to Stanford University from any location within 8 miles of campus. In order to use this service, freshmen must first register with Parking and Transportation services.

If you are on campus and in need of a safe ride home (note that I didn’t say if you don’t feel like walking home in the rain or if you have too many books to carry), call the number above from your cell phone or 5-SURE from any campus landline. Program staffers will dispatch a student driver to pick you up.


Athletic Facilities

Avery Recreation Pool

Outside, recreational and instructional swimming are offered at the 50-meter Avery Recreation Pool (not to be confused with the Avery Aquatic Center).

Avery Aquatic Center

On Nelson Mall

Mon–Fri: 10am–2pm and 6pm–8pm. Sat–Sun: 12pm–5pm

Widely respected as one of the most beautiful aquatics facilities in the world, Avery is the home of Stanford’s insanely talented and dead sexy aquatic athletes. (See: Men’s Swimming) Our aquatic teams are consistently among the best of the best and the Avery Aquatics Center is where it all happens. However, recreational swim allows non-athletes to sport their speedos during lunch hours. Make sure to shave those legs to cut down that 200 meter time. Locker rooms are available.


Popular Paths to Jog Around Campus

1.) Palm Drive—If you run down the tree-lined avenue and back, you’ll complete a one mile circuit and get to look at a lot of palm trees.

2.) Lake Lagunita—The Lake’s hardly a marsh in the fall, but the almost-one-mile-long dirt trail affords some pretty views of the pond-like Lake Lag come spring rainfall. Convenient and bumpy.

3.) Campus Loop—A fairly flat, 4-mile circuit around campus. Note: the Loop is well-lit at night except for a small stretch of it on west campus when it becomes Junipero Serra Blvd, beginning at Narnia and ending at the Driving Range on the Santa Teresa side. If you are running at night, your best bet is to stay on the lit portion of Campus Drive Loop and double back when it’s appropriate.

4.) The Dish—The most challenging of all Stanford routes, running to the Dish and back involves 4 miles of heavy hills, but beautiful scenery. Note: this trail is unlit. “Walking the Dish” is a popular activity for many people and can be utilized as either an exercise tool, a social activity, or a romantic hike.




Burnham Pavilion at the Ford Center

Burnham Pavilion hosts volleyball, open recreation as well as badminton tournaments. The Ford Center houses recreational basketball courts and squash courts as well as a multitude of rowing machines and stationary bikes and a gymnastics arena. Burnham and the Ford Center combine to form one building you can access from either entrance. The building also has varsity coaching offices upstairs. The building is perhaps most famous for the scantily clad young gents that practice their race day stroke on the building’s ERG machines. This is our crew team. They’re good.

Cobb Track at Angel Field

This track is home to both the men’s and women’s track & field teams, and is also open everyday for campus recreation. The annual Relay for Life is also hosted here.

Golf Course

On Links Rd, bring your ID and golfing here is cheap and worthwhile. The course boasts views of the surrounding mountains and has some of the most breathtaking scenery in all of Stanford. You can sometimes even see San Francisco from the 18th hole. Rates are cheaper at dusk for students.

Maples Pavilion

Maples Pavilion is the home of Stanford’s basketball teams. Our ladies are always among the best and our men have a great year ahead of them.

Roble Gym (Opens Spring 2016)

Roble Gym, while still called a Gym, is now mainly used by the Drama and Dance departments. Next to the building, however, is Roble Field (big, green space) and Roble Pool, which has recreational hours.

Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation

You must have a SUID to get into the gym.

The Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation is the biggest and most popular gym on campus. The ACSR has every machine to work every muscle in your body. It also has a climbing wall and a large studio where yoga and tae kwon do classes are held.

Arrillaga Family Sports Center 

The Arrillaga Family Sports Center houses the varsity football locker room, a sports medicine suite, varsity coaching suites, the Hall of Fame, weight training rooms, and an indoor basketball court. Jimmy V’s sports café is also located in the AFSC. However, if you’re not an athlete, you most likely won’t be spending much time here.

Arrillaga Outdoor Education and Recreation Center  [AOERC] (or  “Far-rillaga”)

Mon–Fri: 5:30am–1am; Sat: 8am-9pm; Sun: 8am–1am

Inside the 75,000 square foot facility you will find a 14,000-square-foot fitness center with the latest cardio and strength training equipment, one of the largest climbing walls in the United States, an outdoor education center, three exercise studios, a training room, classrooms and three courts for basketball, volleyball and badminton. The facility also includes locker rooms and showers.
